Super Ulano: A Playful Retro Display Font for Brand Identity

It started with a blank brand board—and a client who described their new handmade ceramics studio as “warm, nostalgic, and quietly joyful.” No mood board yet. Just a coffee stain on my sketchbook and the quiet hum of my laptop fan. I opened my fonts folder, scrolled past the usual suspects, and landed on Super Ulano. Instantly, something clicked. Not because it was loud or flashy—but because Super Ulano is a cool, playful and retro styled display font. It felt like finding the right pair of vintage sunglasses: unexpected, full of character, and instantly clarifying.

Super Ulano for Handmade Studio Logos and Shop Signage

I dropped Super Ulano into a rough logo lockup—just the studio’s initials stacked in clean white space. The flowing curves and subtle bounce gave it rhythm without fuss. No tight kerning needed; the letterforms naturally leaned into each other, like friends leaning on a counter at a neighborhood café. As a display font, it wasn’t meant for paragraphs—but as a logo? Perfect. I mocked it up on a matte ceramic tile sample, then on a brushed aluminum shop sign. On both, Super Ulano held its own: legible from six feet away, expressive at arm’s length, and unmistakably human. That’s the magic of this kind of fonts set—it doesn’t shout “look at me,” but whispers “you belong here.”

Super Ulano for Product Labels and Packaging Design

Next came the packaging: small kraft paper boxes, reusable cotton drawstring bags, and minimalist sticker labels. For the front-of-box tagline (“Hand-thrown. Sun-dried. Slow-made.”), I used Super Ulano at 28pt over uncoated stock. Its flexibility shone—no awkward spacing, no visual tension. Because Super Ulano is flowing, flexible and incredibly cool, it adapted beautifully to curved label surfaces and narrow bag tags. I paired it with a warm, low-contrast sans serif (think a friendly, slightly rounded Grotesk) for body text—clean contrast without competition. As a display font, Super Ulano anchors the hierarchy; everything else supports it, never fights it.

How Super Ulano Performs on Social Media Graphics and Instagram Posts

For Instagram, I tested Super Ulano across three formats: a carousel slide announcing a new glaze drop, a square post featuring a behind-the-scenes studio shot, and a Stories highlight icon. In every case, it scaled cleanly—even at small sizes in Stories, where I used just the first word (“Glaze”) in Super Ulano with soft shadow. Its retro charm translated effortlessly to digital: not pixelated, not stiff, not overly stylized. Unlike some script-heavy fonts, Super Ulano avoids readability pitfalls while keeping personality intact. And yes—it’s optimized for web use: clean vector outlines, solid hinting, and standard OpenType formatting so it renders consistently across devices.

Super Ulano for Wedding Invitations and Elegant Branding

A week later, a friend asked if I’d help design invites for her backyard wedding. She wanted “vintage but not fussy, romantic but grounded.” I pulled out Super Ulano again—not for the full invitation copy, but for the couple’s names on the front. Paired with a delicate serif (a gentle Didot variant), it created instant elegance with warmth. Why? Because Super Ulano is a cool, playful and retro styled display font—it carries nostalgia without cliché. No clipart roses or scripted flourishes needed. Just confident, flowing letterforms that say “this matters” without saying “look how fancy I am.” As a display font, it’s ideal for short-form, high-impact moments: names, dates, event titles—anything meant to be seen, felt, and remembered.

Super Ulano for Editorial Design and Printed Flyers

When designing a seasonal flyer for the ceramics studio’s open studio day, I used Super Ulano for the headline (“Summer Clay Days”) and kept body copy in a relaxed, airy sans. The contrast worked because Super Ulano doesn’t try to do everything—it knows its role. As a display font, it commands attention, then steps back. On uncoated newsprint, it retained its charm: no ink spread muddied the curves, no thin strokes vanished. That’s a sign of thoughtful fonts engineering—something you notice only when it *doesn’t* break. And because it’s designed for real-world use, it includes standard ligatures and stylistic alternates (like a swash ‘y’ or connected ‘st’ pair) that add polish without extra effort.

Super Ulano for Website Headers and Digital Branding

For the studio’s website hero section, I set “Clay & Quiet” in Super Ulano over a soft-focus image of drying shelves. At desktop size, it breathed. At mobile? Still legible—especially with modest tracking and a touch of letter-spacing. This is where Super Ulano proves its versatility: it’s not just for print. As a display font, it thrives in hero headers, CTA buttons (“Reserve Your Spot”), and even animated SVG text treatments (I tested a subtle hover lift effect—gorgeous). Just remember: always pair it with a highly legible web-safe or variable sans for navigation and body copy. Super Ulano leads; the supporting typeface listens.

Testing Super Ulano Before Finalizing a Full Brand System

Before locking anything in, I ran three quick checks: First, printed a full-color mockup of business cards, stickers, and a tote bag—did Super Ulano hold up under different substrates and scales? Yes. Second, exported PNGs at multiple sizes and checked them on my phone, tablet, and client’s older iPad—no jagged edges, no collapsed counters. Third, reviewed the license: commercial use included, no per-seat restrictions, OTF/TTF formats, multilingual Latin support (covers English, Spanish, French, German accents). All clear. With Super Ulano is flowing, flexible and incredibly cool, you don’t need ten weights—you need one strong voice, well-executed.

If you’re building a brand that values authenticity over algorithm, craft over clutter, and joy over jargon—Super Ulano fits like your favorite apron: familiar, functional, and quietly full of soul. It’s not a font you overthink. It’s one you trust, test, and return to—again and again—as a display font that delivers personality without pretense. And as fonts go, that kind of confidence? That’s rare.
